American Online Schools for International Students: 5 Compared on Tuition, Time Zones and Who Can Enrol (2026–27)

Key visual for a comparison of American online schools for international students

Start researching American online schools for international students and the first surprise is the price range. For the same thing — an American high school education, online — published tuition runs from about $8,000 to about $32,000 a year. The second surprise is that the schools advertised as free are not open to you at all if you live in Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok or Sydney.

This guide compares five American online schools that families in Asia most often come across — Stanford Online High School, Laurel Springs School, Pearson Online Academy, K12 Private Academy and Connections Academy — using only their official 2026–27 information. Tuition is only part of it. For international students, two other questions decide whether a school works in practice: what time the live classes happen, and whether the school enrols students from your country at all.

Public or private: which American online schools take international students

American online schools come in two kinds, and the difference matters more than any fee.

Public online schools — Connections Academy, and the state schools that use Stride K12’s curriculum — are funded by the state, so families pay no tuition. But they are only open to children who live in that state, and proof of residency is required.

Private online schools — Stanford Online High School, Laurel Springs School, Pearson Online Academy and K12 Private Academy — charge tuition, and in return they accept students living outside the US (with some country exceptions). If you live in Asia or Oceania, these are the American online schools you can realistically choose from.

The flip side: if your family is living in the US on a posting, a free public online school in your state may be a genuine option for as long as you are there.

The most expensive private school costs about four times the cheapest. That gap is not a quality score. You are paying either for small live classes with a fixed timetable, or for self-paced courses with teacher support that fit any time zone. They are different products.

5 American online schools compared for international students

1. Stanford Online High School: selective, small, live

Stanford OHS is an independent online school within Stanford University for grades 7–12. It opened in 2006 and lists 1,092 students from 55 countries. Teaching is built around live, college-style seminars with an average of 12 students and never more than 17. It is accredited by WASC and CAIS.

For 2026–27, full-time tuition (four or more courses) is $31,900; part-time (two or three courses) is $19,140; a single course is $6,380. The application fee is $100, and the diploma requires full-time enrolment in the final two years. Admission is selective.

On time zones, the school says international students can take courses between 6:00am and 10:30pm in their own local time, and it rebuilds the master schedule every spring around all students’ constraints — so individual class times cannot be known in advance. In practice, choices narrow the further you live from California. Full details are in our Stanford Online High School tuition and review.

2. Laurel Springs School: self-paced, any time zone

Laurel Springs has taught online since 1991, from kindergarten to grade 12. Its core model is self-paced and asynchronous, so there are no fixed live lessons to organise your day around. Families in more than 100 countries use it, and over 15% of students are international. It is accredited by WASC and Cognia.

Full-year tuition is $7,200 for elementary (K–5), $8,300 for middle school (6–8) and $11,700 for high school (9–12). The Academy, which adds weekly live workshops, costs $12,650 (grades 6–8) or $17,250 (grades 9–12). Families sign an enrolment agreement and pay a deposit, and courses can start on almost any Wednesday.

Of the five, this is the easiest to fit around an Asian day. The live extras are the exception: the school describes its virtual clubs and activities as an option for students available during US-friendly time zones. Ask about shipping costs for physical materials, too. See Laurel Springs School tuition and review.

3. Pearson Online Academy: start with one course, pay by card

Run by Pearson, this private K–12 school publishes tuition of $5,450 for elementary (K–5), $7,050 for middle school (6–8) and $8,250 for high school (9–12), with 5% off for paying in full. You can also take a single course ($230–$335 for K–8; $435–$850 for high school), which lets a child add one subject in English alongside their local school.

Three things to know from abroad. Payment is by credit card only — JCB is accepted, but bank transfers are not. Shipping for materials outside the continental US is quoted before enrolment and not published. Its office hours are given in US Eastern time, and no live-class timetable is published. Our guide to Pearson Online Academy tuition covers the questions to ask first.

4. K12 Private Academy: lowest private tuition, with country limits

K12 Private Academy is a private school powered by Stride K12, for Pre-K to grade 12. Tuition is $4,495 for Pre-K, $5,995 for elementary, $6,995 for middle school and $7,995 for high school — the lowest of the four private schools here. It is accredited through Cognia and offers NCAA-approved courses.

It tells international families they can join live classes or watch the recordings later. It does not publish which time zone the live sessions run in, or class sizes. And it lists countries it cannot enrol students from, including the UK, Ireland, much of the EU, China and India. Check your own country first. More in our Stride K12 tuition and review.

5. Connections Academy: free, but only if you live in the right state

Connections Academy is a network of tuition-free public online schools supported by Connections Education, part of Pearson. As of September 2026 there were schools in 32 states, and eligible residents pay no tuition, with textbooks and materials provided. Students combine teacher-led LiveLesson sessions (typically about an hour) with self-paced work.

It is not open to families living outside the US; for them, Connections points to Pearson Online Academy instead. If you are living in the US on a posting, it is worth checking whether your state has a school. See is Connections Academy really free?

Also asked about: Alpha School’s online option is paused

Alpha School, known for its “two-hour learning” model, is mainly an in-person network of US campuses, with listed tuition of $10,000 to $75,000 depending on the campus. Its online programme, Alpha Anywhere, has paused enrolment through the end of 2026 according to its FAQ. See Alpha School tuition and review.

Five questions for a family living in Asia

Set aside tuition for a moment and look at the conditions that decide whether a school fits your day.

Table comparing Stanford OHS, Laurel Springs, Pearson Online Academy, K12 Private Academy and NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY on enrolling from abroad, live classes, fit with Asian time zones, US diploma, and published tuition

The pattern is clear: the more a school is built around live teaching, the harder it is to fit into an Asian day. Stanford OHS puts live seminars at the centre and so cannot escape US West Coast hours. Laurel Springs removes the time-zone problem, but offers fewer moments of learning together in real time. Neither is better; the question is which your child needs. Three checks before you apply

If an American online school stays on your list, compare tuition last.

Three checks before applying to an American online school: decide if you need the diploma, convert live classes to local time, and confirm country eligibility, shipping and payment

Step one matters most. How a US high school diploma is treated by universities in your country — or in the UK, Australia or elsewhere — varies by institution, so check the admissions pages of two or three target universities directly. Our guide to where online international school graduates go shows how to work backwards from the university. Compulsory-education rules also differ by country, and in some places enrolling in an overseas online school does not by itself meet them.

If you would rather start from how your child learns best than from which country’s curriculum, our learning model sets out the approach we are designing, and how to choose an online international school walks through the wider checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Which American online school is cheapest for international students?

Of these five, the lowest published high school tuition is K12 Private Academy ($7,995), followed by Pearson Online Academy ($8,250, or $7,838 paid in full). But K12 Private Academy excludes some countries, and Pearson quotes international shipping case by case. Compare the total including shipping and payment method, not the headline fee.

Can international students attend a free American online school?

No. Connections Academy and K12-powered public schools are free because the state pays tuition for its own residents. Families living outside the US need a private online school.

Can my child keep attending their local school?

Often, yes. Stanford OHS offers part-time and single-course options, and Pearson Online Academy sells single courses, both of which suit studying alongside a local school. Check first that the class times work in your time zone.

Does my child need fluent English to enrol?

Teaching and materials are in English, and support for English learners differs by school. Ask each school directly about entry requirements; we cannot make that call for you.

Look at the fee table last

American online schools are easier to compare than most, because they publish real tuition. That is also why it is tempting to decide on the number alone. For a family in Asia, the questions that matter more are what time classes happen, whether your country is eligible, and what the tuition actually buys.

NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY is an online international school scheduled to open in September 2027, with trial classes planned for April and May 2027. We are designing it around small live classes held in Asia and Oceania daytime hours, where children are never ranked by test scores and have room to grow to like themselves and the world. We will share our curriculum, timetable and approach to fees by email as they are confirmed.

There is no need to decide today. Try rewriting one school’s timetable in your local time — it narrows the list faster than any fee table.
