Is Connections Academy free? Yes, for eligible families. Connections Academy tuition is $0: it runs tuition-free online public schools for K–12 students who live in a state where it has a school. What Connections Academy is

Connections Academy is a network of online public schools supported by Connections Education, which is part of Pearson. It is not one national school. Each state has its own school (California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon and South Carolina have more than one), usually run with a local school district or as a charter school. Each state school has its own grades, enrolment deadlines, technology offer and graduation requirements. On its homepage, Connections Academy says it has served “100K+” students over “20+” years.

Because these are public schools, the rules are the same as at a local public school. You need to live within the school’s boundaries (here, the state), and you need to show proof of age, proof of residency and immunisation records. Connections Academy tuition and fees (2026–27, official)

Enrolment is open for the 2026–27 school year. For an eligible resident, tuition is $0. The official cost page says: “Connections Academy® provides a tuition-free, virtual school education,” and “There are no hidden costs!” Textbooks, workbooks and project materials are included. Some things are not, and they differ from state to state. The table below sets out what the national cost page, the FAQ and two state cost pages (Texas and Ohio) say.

A total-cost example using only official numbers. Take a family with two children at Connections Academy for four years. Tuition is 2 children × 4 years × $0 = $0. The rest of the bill depends on your state and your choices: supplies, printer ink, optional trips, internet (minus any subsidy), and a computer only if your state school does not lend one. The official site does not publish dollar amounts for these items, so we won’t guess them. For contrast, look at Pearson Online Academy, the private sibling. It lists full-time high school tuition at $8,250 per year ($7,838 if you pay in full), with no year label on the page when we checked. Two high schoolers for four years would cost 2 × 4 × $8,250 = $66,000, or 2 × 4 × $7,838 = $62,704 paid in full. That gap is the value of state funding, and it is why eligibility matters so much. Financial aid? A tuition-free public school has no tuition to discount, so there are no scholarships or sibling discounts in the usual sense. The support that exists is aimed at technology: loaned computers and internet subsidies in selected states.

How a school day works: schedule, live classes and time zones

Connections Academy is mostly self-paced within a structure. The official “How It Works” page describes about 30 hours a week of learning with the Learning Coach. The share of screen time rises with age:

• Elementary: about 30% of the school day on a computer and 70% offline, with books, workbooks and hands-on activities.
• Middle school: about 75% on a computer and 25% working independently offline.
• High school: about 90% on a computer and 10% offline.

LiveLesson sessions. The FAQ says students “will need to be available for teacher-led LiveLesson® sessions” and can arrange their free time in between. An official article explains that a LiveLesson “typically” lasts about one hour, is taught in real time, and uses microphone, chat, hand-raising and breakout rooms. Cameras are encouraged but not required. Sessions are scheduled at different times across the week and “are often recorded”, so a student can attend live one week and watch the recording another week. Attendance rules are set by each state school.

The Learning Coach. This is the defining feature. The Learning Coach is “a parent, caregiver, or other trusted adult”. They set up the school day, keep an eye on attendance and progress, stay in touch with teachers, and help with lessons. The official time guide suggests about 5–6 hours a day in grades K–5 and 2–3 hours a day in grades 6–12. For working parents, this is the real cost of Connections Academy, even though tuition is $0.

Time zones. Each school runs on its own state’s time. LiveLessons are scheduled for US families living in that state, and there is no separate international timetable, because non-residents generally cannot enrol. Accreditation, diploma and college recognition

The official accreditation page says “Connections Academy® is a division of Connections Education®, which is accredited by Cognia”. It adds that “many of the Connections Academy–supported schools” are also accredited by regional accrediting organisations. New schools “typically” start their own accreditation process after their first full year of operation. Cognia is a large nonprofit accreditor that operates in more than 80 countries. We confirmed the accreditation statement on the school’s own website. Cognia’s public directory is a search tool, so to check a particular state school, search for its exact name there.

Diploma. High school students work toward “your state’s specific graduation requirements”. They usually take six courses per semester and may need to pass state tests where required. Because each Connections Academy is a state public school, graduates follow that state’s diploma requirements. The official diploma page does not spell out which body signs the diploma, so ask your state school directly. College recognition: the accreditation page lists courses approved by the NCAA Eligibility Center at SACS-accredited Connections Academy high schools, and several school listings offer AP, honors and dual-enrolment options. People searching for Connections Academy usually compare it with the other big public option (Stride’s K12-powered schools) and with Pearson’s own private school. Parent reviews on the official site and on independent review sites are mixed, as they are for most large school networks. The same themes keep coming up. Here they are, each with what the official information says.

“It’s free, so what’s the catch?”

There is no tuition, but it is not cost-free, and it is not effort-free. Families cover supplies, optional trips, internet and, in some states, a computer and printer. The larger cost is time: up to 5–6 hours a day of Learning Coach involvement in elementary school. Families who were surprised by the workload usually started with a “homeschool made easy” picture. It is a full public school run from your home.

“The enrolment paperwork takes a long time”

Some reviews describe onboarding as slow. Part of the reason is legal: as a public school, each state school must collect proof of age, proof of residency (Colorado asks for a document from the last 60 days), immunisation records and prior records or transcripts. State deadlines are firm. Colorado’s first-semester window closed on 11 September 2026. Upload documents early. Colorado asks for at least 10 business days before the deadline.

“Will my child be isolated?”

Connections Academy points to LiveLesson breakout rooms, clubs, optional in-person field trips and events. How much a child joins in varies a lot, because live sessions can often be replaced by recordings. If social contact matters to you, plan to attend LiveLessons live and join clubs. Don’t rely on recordings.

“We still have to do state tests?”

Yes. The FAQ is explicit that online public school students take the tests their state or district requires. Families looking for complete freedom from state testing are usually looking at a private school or homeschooling instead.

“Can we keep going if we move abroad?”

Generally no. Enrolment depends on living in the state. The Colorado and Texas enrolment pages both begin with “You must reside within the state” and require proof of residency. There are narrow military exceptions, such as Colorado’s rule for military families who keep Colorado as their legal state of residence for tax and voter registration. “Does it work for students with IEPs or special needs?”

Connections Academy lists special education and IEP services, and many school listings show “Special Education”. Some parent reviews say their experience fell short. Ask your state school exactly how services are delivered online, and get the answer in writing, before you withdraw from your current school.

3. NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY (NGA). NGA is a different kind of school. It is an online international school for ages 6–18, focused on Asia and Oceania and run by NIJIN Inc. in Japan. Its sister alternative school in Japan, NIJIN Academy, has more than 1,000 students. NGA does not rank students. It teaches in small live dialogue groups of about 8, teaches subjects in English with a bilingual (English–Japanese) mentor, sets English levels using the CEFR, and runs social co-creation projects with companies and governments. There is no entrance exam and no English requirement. A child can take NGA alongside a local school or as their main school, and it moves with the family if you relocate. Tuition has not been published yet. It is designed to be far more affordable than a typical international school, with no enrolment, facility or uniform fees, materials included and sibling discounts.
