An international school education in Asia does not have to cost US$30,000 a year. The famous names in Singapore and Hong Kong often charge more than that even in Grade 1, and that is the figure most families see first. But across Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines there are affordable international schools that publish their fees openly, and some charge less than US$5,000 a year in the early grades.
This guide lists 11 of them, chosen because each school publishes its fee schedule on its own website. We compare 2026-27 tuition (2027/28 for SPH Sentul City, whose page has already moved on) for Grade 1 and for the top grade, then look at what the headline tuition leaves out: registration fees, deposits, development charges and annual levies. Conversions use European Central Bank reference rates of 15 October 2026 (US$1 = MYR 4.0825, THB 33.54, IDR 17,944, PHP 63.074) and a market rate of US$1 = VND 25,890. Treat the dollar figures as a guide.

The short answer: affordable international schools exist, but tuition is only part of the bill
Of the 11 schools we checked, the lowest Grade 1 tuition was at Ekamai International School in Bangkok (THB 126,000, about US$3,760), SPH Sentul City near Jakarta (IDR 73 million, about US$4,070) and Tenby Schools Ipoh in Malaysia (MYR 17,160, about US$4,200). Most of the others sit between about US$6,300 and US$12,000 in Grade 1. That is a fraction of what the best-known schools in Singapore or Hong Kong charge.
Three things matter before you shortlist. First, one-off charges and annual levies can add a great deal in the first year. Second, fees climb with age: at most of these schools the final years cost 1.4 to just over 2 times as much as Grade 1, and at Tenby Ipoh more than 3 times. Third, fees are reset every year. Compare the total to graduation, not the Grade 1 headline.
11 affordable international schools in Asia and their fees
The table lists annual tuition for a Grade 1 equivalent and for the top grade, from lowest to highest Grade 1 fee. Every figure comes from the school’s own website or fee PDF, checked on 16 October 2026. SPH Sentul City shows only its 2027/28 schedule, so those are the figures used. Where a school publishes only termly fees, we multiplied by the number of terms.

Malaysia: British curriculum at an affordable price (Tenby, HELP)
Malaysia is one of the easiest places in Asia to find an affordable international school with a British curriculum. Tenby Schools runs several campuses, each with its own fee schedule. For 2026/27, Year 2 (the Grade 1 equivalent) costs MYR 17,160 a year at the Ipoh campus, MYR 25,842 in Penang and MYR 33,390 at Setia Eco Park in Selangor. Within one school group, the Klang Valley campus costs almost twice as much as the Ipoh campus. One caution: Tenby Ipoh’s table shows Year 11 at MYR 18,633 a term, while the FAQ on the same page gives a top termly fee of MYR 12,422. Ask the school which is correct before you apply.
HELP International School in Kuala Lumpur charges MYR 41,460 a year in Year 2, and quotes its A Level programme as MYR 84,000 for the two years. The school also notes that 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST) applies to students paying more than MYR 60,000 a year, so check whether the tax applies at your child’s level. For the wider market, see our guide to international schools in Kuala Lumpur.
Thailand: the widest range of fees (Ekamai, Wells, Traill, Lanna)
Ekamai International School in Bangkok follows an American curriculum with AP courses. Tuition is a flat THB 126,000 a year from Pre-K to Grade 8 and THB 136,000 in Grades 9–12, the lowest in this list. As the next section shows, though, a general fee, meals, a registration fee and deposits bring the school’s published first-year total for a new Grade 1 student to THB 466,000.
Wells International School (THB 392,000 a year in Grade 1) and the British-curriculum Traill International School (THB 404,100 in Years 1–2) sit in the middle of Bangkok’s affordable band. In the northern city of Chiang Mai, Lanna International School charges THB 530,400 in Years 1–2, a reminder that a smaller city does not always mean lower fees. Our page on affordable international schools in Bangkok compares the Bangkok market in more detail.

Vietnam: a bilingual option (EMASI)
EMASI Schools in Ho Chi Minh City combine Vietnamese–English bilingual teaching with the Cambridge curriculum (IGCSE and A Level). For 2026-27, Grade 1 costs VND 181.9 million a year and Grade 12 VND 362.8 million, or VND 433.9 million on the A Level track. The fee table does not say which campus it covers, and meals, uniforms, materials and exam fees are charged separately. See international schools in Ho Chi Minh City for the wider market.
Indonesia: same school name, very different fees (SPH Sentul City)
Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH) is a Christian school group teaching IB programmes on several campuses around Jakarta. The Sentul City campus in Bogor already shows its 2027/28 schedule: IDR 73 million a year in Grades 1–2 and IDR 150 million in Grades 11–12, plus an annual development fee (DPP) of IDR 17 million. SPH’s Kemang Village campus charges IDR 219 million in Grade 1, three times as much. Always check fees by campus, not by school name.
The Philippines: fees in two currencies (Cebu International School)
Cebu International School teaches IB programmes and bills in both US dollars and pesos. For 2026-27, Grade 1 costs US$2,147 plus PHP 579,366, and Grades 11–12 cost US$3,927 plus PHP 1,104,170. With a two-currency bill, exchange-rate movements change what you actually pay. For Manila, see international schools in Manila.
The hidden costs: what does the first year really cost?
A low tuition fee can come with large one-off charges in the year your child joins. Here are the main charges listed on these schools’ fee schedules (not a complete list):
- Ekamai: registration THB 150,000, development fund THB 100,000 (fully refundable) and book deposit THB 30,000 (70% refundable). The published first-year total for Grade 1 is THB 466,000 (about US$13,900), 3.7 times the tuition.
- Wells: registration THB 5,000, campus development fee THB 140,000 (non-refundable) and damage deposit THB 35,000 (refundable).
- Traill: registration THB 130,000 (non-refundable) and security deposit THB 35,000 (refundable).
- HELP: application MYR 1,000 and registration MYR 12,000 (about US$2,940), plus a deposit and a technology fee whose amounts are not published.
- Cebu International School: application PHP 12,000 and an entrance fee of PHP 126,248 for Grade 1 (PHP 341,373 from Grade 6).
- SPH Sentul City: application IDR 2 million, plus the annual IDR 17 million development fee (DPP).
- EMASI: application fee (VND 500,000 for Grade 1), a security deposit of VND 20 million (refundable with 60 days’ notice) and an annual development fee of VND 12 million (non-refundable).
- Tenby Schools: application MYR 1,200 (Ipoh) or MYR 2,000 (Penang, Setia Eco Park), registration MYR 5,000 (Ipoh) or MYR 7,000, a refundable deposit of half to one term’s fee, and a resources or technology fee of MYR 1,500 to 1,560 a year.
- Lanna: assessment THB 6,000, registration THB 90,000 (non-refundable) and an equipment deposit of THB 13,000 (refundable).
Most schools also charge separately for meals, school buses, uniforms, activities, trips and IGCSE or A Level exam entries. A refundable deposit is still money you will not see again until your child leaves. Work out year one and the following years separately. For the one-off charges at premium schools, see international school fees in Asia.

Affordable vs premium international schools: what is the difference?
For comparison, Grade 1 tuition at two well-known premium schools is MYR 89,070 at The Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur (about US$21,800) and THB 1,015,000 at International School Bangkok (about US$30,300), about 1.4 times the dearest school above (Lanna) and about 8 times the cheapest (Ekamai). The gap usually comes from:
- Location and land: the same Tenby group charges almost twice as much in the Klang Valley as in Ipoh. Campus size and facilities show up in the fee.
- Teacher recruitment: schools that hire many teachers from overseas carry higher salary costs.
- Who the students are: some affordable schools serve mostly local families. If an international mix matters to you, ask about the nationality balance.
- Outcomes and transparency: whether a school publishes university destinations and IB or A Level results varies.
Neither group is better by definition, and many affordable schools are a good fit. Start from what your child will study and where they want to go at 18, then compare fees. Our guide to the types of international schools explains the curricula.
Three checks before you choose an affordable international school
- Compare the first-year total. Add registration, enrolment, development and deposit charges, plus meals and transport. At Ekamai the first-year payment is more than three times the tuition.
- Look at the top-grade fee. Tenby Ipoh costs about US$4,200 in Year 2 and about US$13,690 in Year 11. Compare the cost to graduation, not your child’s current year.
- Check qualifications and accreditation. Confirm which route the school offers (IGCSE, A Level, IB or a US diploma), whether an IB school is authorized or still a candidate, and whether it holds CIS, WASC or British Schools Overseas accreditation. Check on the accrediting body’s own website. Our guide to checking accreditation shows how.

No affordable school nearby? Consider an online international school
Most affordable international schools are in capitals or large cities. If there is no suitable school near your posting, or work and visas tie you to a place without one, an online international school is another option to compare. Your child can keep the same school through a move, wherever the family lives. The trade-offs are real: there are no classmates in person every day, and qualifications and accreditation vary from school to school.
We compare the costs in are online international schools affordable? and online vs in-person international school costs. If you live in Singapore, our page on a cheaper alternative to a Singapore international school covers the local picture. To see how NGA plans its lessons, read about our online school curriculum.

Where NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY fits
NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY (NGA) is an online international school for ages 6 to 18, planned to open in September 2027. It is run by NIJIN Inc., which operates learning programmes in Japan, including NIJIN Academy for children who do not attend school, where more than 1,000 children have learned so far. NGA plans small live classes of about eight students, with subjects taught in English and bilingual Japanese–English mentors, and admission that is not based on test-score rankings.
To be clear about the limits: NGA has not opened, is not yet accredited, has not published its fees and has no graduates. If your child needs an IGCSE, A Level, IB or US diploma route, NGA cannot replace the schools in this guide. We hope to be one option worth comparing for families with no affordable campus school nearby, families who expect to keep moving, and families who want to add English-medium learning alongside a local school.
FAQ
Which countries in Asia have affordable international schools?
Among the schools we checked on official websites, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia each had a school charging under US$5,000 a year in Grade 1 (Tenby Schools Ipoh, Ekamai International School and SPH Sentul City). Fees vary widely by city and campus within each country.
What is the cheapest international school in this list?
On tuition alone, Ekamai International School in Bangkok (THB 126,000 a year from Pre-K to Grade 8). Once the general fee, meals, registration and deposits are added, the published first-year total for a new Grade 1 student is THB 466,000, so “cheapest” depends on how you count.
Are affordable international schools lower quality?
Not necessarily. Fee differences come largely from location, teacher recruitment and the student mix. To judge quality, look at the curriculum and accreditation, graduate destinations, a lesson visit and conversations with current parents.
How much is an affordable international school in Malaysia?
Among the schools here, Grade 1 equivalent tuition ranges from MYR 17,160 (Tenby Ipoh) to MYR 41,460 (HELP International School) a year, roughly US$4,200 to US$10,160. At a premium school such as The Alice Smith School, the Grade 1 equivalent is about MYR 89,070, and SST may apply on top.
Choose a school you can afford until graduation
Affordable international schools in Asia are real: some charge around US$4,000 a year in the early grades, and fees can differ almost twofold between campuses of the same group. But tuition is only part of what you pay, and fees rise as your child moves up. Look at the first-year total, the cost to graduation and the qualification your child will hold at 18, together as a family.
For families who cannot find an affordable school within reach, NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY is preparing to open in September 2027 (planned), with trial classes in April–May 2027. We will email fees and timetables as soon as they are set.
Once you have two or three schools in mind, ask each one two questions: what will we pay in the first year, and what is the fee in the final year? The answers will tell you whether the school is one you can stay with.
