Nisai Virtual Academy Fees & Review (2026–27): Costs and Alternatives

Nisai Virtual Academy fees and review 2026-27

Nisai Virtual Academy fees for UK and international families are not published as a price list on the official website (nisai.com, checked 6 October 2026). The school says the cost “depends on the student’s age, year group, subjects, timetable and level of support”, and that some places are funded by local authorities while others are paid privately. The only Nisai fee schedule we could find in public is on Nisai’s Japan-facing site, which lists annual fees per subject in yen (for example ¥290,400 a year for one International GCSE subject, tax included). Exam entry fees are always extra.

If you searched “Nisai Virtual Academy fees” or “Nisai Virtual Academy review”, you probably want three things: a realistic idea of cost, whether the school is properly recognised, and whether its live online lessons will suit your child. This page answers those questions using only Nisai’s own pages, its course list and the published Ofsted report — then compares it fairly with King’s InterHigh, Minerva Virtual Academy and NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY.

The short answer: who Nisai Virtual Academy suits — and who it doesn’t

  • Suits families who want live, teacher-led British lessons rather than a self-paced course library — Nisai describes itself as “a live, teacher-led online school”.
  • Suits children with SEND, an EHCP, anxiety, medical needs or attendance barriers in England, where the local authority may fund the place.
  • Suits learners who want to take only some subjects: courses are sold per subject, so a student can study one International GCSE or a full set.
  • Suits families who value an external quality check: Nisai Virtual Academy is accredited under the DfE’s Online Education Accreditation Scheme (OEAS).
  • Harder fit for families who need a published price before they enquire — UK fees are quoted individually.
  • Harder fit if you cannot arrange exams yourself: the UK course list says the customer must source an exam centre, and exam costs are not included.
  • Harder fit for a child who wants a full, all-day school timetable with one fixed annual fee — compare King’s InterHigh or Minerva Virtual Academy below.

Most families start by asking two questions: what will it cost, and will the lessons fit our day?

What Nisai Virtual Academy is

Nisai is a UK online education provider. Its own “about” page states that the Nisai group was founded in 1996 and that Nisai Virtual Academy began operating in 2004, with a head office in Watford and a teaching operation in Stockton-on-Tees. Today the brand on the website is Nisai Learning; the accredited legal entity is Nisai Virtual Academy Limited, and the international arm is called Nisai Global School. You may see all three names in reviews — they refer to the same organisation.

Nisai works in two ways. Families can enrol directly and pay privately, and schools and local authorities can commission places (for example as alternative provision or as part of an EHCP). This is why a lot of what you read about Nisai is about re-engaging children who have struggled with mainstream school. Nisai says it supports 1,500+ students, works with 135+ UK local authorities and has learners in 30+ countries.

Nisai Virtual Academy fees (2026–27, official)

Here is exactly what the official sources do and do not say about cost.

UK site (nisai.com): fees on request

The Online School page says cost “depends on the student’s age, year group, subjects, timetable and level of support” and asks families to contact the team. The Advice for Parents page adds that “costs vary by year group and support level”, that some families receive funding support while others fund privately, and that in many cases fees for online SEND learning can be covered by local authorities through an EHCP or alternative provision funding. No sterling price list is published.

The one sterling figure in the UK Course List 2026–2027 (PDF) is for exams: Nisai can provide Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills English or Maths remote exams at £330.00 plus VAT per subject. The same document states that “exam-related costs are not included in Nisai’s advertised costs”.

Japan-facing site: published yen fees per subject

Nisai’s Japan-facing site, run by its Japanese company Nisai Japan, publishes a full fee page. These prices are for families enrolling through Nisai Japan and are shown tax-included in yen; we have not converted them because the school does not state a sterling equivalent.

Course (Nisai Japan site) Per subject Annual fee by number of subjects Enrolment window
NS primary course (English, Maths, Science, ICT, PSHE, Global Perspectives) ¥22,000 / month (annual fee ÷ 12) 1 subject ¥264,000; 3 subjects ¥792,000; 6 subjects ¥1,425,600 (10% off from 5 subjects) Any time of year
International GCSE course ¥24,200 / month 1 subject ¥290,400; 3 subjects ¥871,200; 5 subjects ¥1,306,800; 6 subjects ¥1,568,160 Until around mid-December
A-Level course ¥26,400 / month 1 subject ¥316,800; 2 subjects ¥633,600; 3 subjects ¥950,400 Until around mid-October
Enrolment fee ¥33,000 one-off, stated as charged for Booster, CEFR and Units of Sound programmes of four months or more

What is extra

  • Exam entries. Paid to the exam centre, not to Nisai, and they rise with the number of subjects.
  • Finding an exam centre. The UK course list says the customer must source an appropriate exam centre for GCSE / International GCSE, AS / A Level and Functional Skills; Nisai’s exams team helps with guidance but “does not source exam centres”. Some International GCSE subjects and Functional Skills may be available with remote invigilation.
  • Materials. Some courses require set texts or a scientific calculator.
  • Optional support. Mentoring, Units of Sound and WordQ are listed as separate services.

A worked example (official numbers only)

Take a child in Japan studying five International GCSE subjects for the usual two-year course: ¥1,306,800 × 2 years = ¥2,613,600 in tuition, before exam entry fees. For a UK family the arithmetic cannot be done from public information — you will need a written quote. When you ask for one, request the total for the full course length, what happens if your child drops a subject, and an estimate of exam fees from your chosen centre. Our guide to online British curriculum school fees shows how to put different schools’ quotes into the same shape.

How a school day works: schedule, live classes and time zones

Nisai is built around scheduled live lessons. The UK course list gives the weekly pattern per subject: KS2, KS3 and GCSE / International GCSE courses typically have 4 × 30-minute live lessons a week, and A Level courses 4 × 1 hour. Recordings are provided for revision, and lessons are interactive (chat, polls, discussion and tasks). Because subjects are booked individually, a child’s week can range from a couple of hours to a fuller timetable.

The 2026–27 term dates follow the English school year: Autumn Term 1 runs from Tuesday 1 September to Friday 23 October 2026, Spring Term 1 starts on Tuesday 5 January 2027 and the year ends on Tuesday 20 July 2027. The course list says all KS4 courses start in September, with a January intake for selected courses; it gives a Year 1 deadline of 5 February 2027 for several International GCSEs and 23 October 2026 for new A Level starters.

Time zones: nisai.com does not publish lesson clock times. The international page says Nisai combines live classes with recordings and learning materials to support students in different time zones. If you live in the Americas or Asia, ask for the actual timetable in your local time before you enrol. For a general picture of how online school days run, see how an online international school works.

Accreditation, diploma and college recognition

Nisai Virtual Academy is accredited under the Online Education Accreditation Scheme, the Department for Education’s voluntary scheme for full-time online providers in England. Ofsted carries out the checks; it does not give OEAS providers grades such as “good” or “outstanding”, only whether the standards are met.

The public record is worth reading in order. At a December 2025 visit, Ofsted found that two curriculum standards were not met because PE and creative/aesthetic education were not yet taught in sufficient depth. After a further visit on 3–4 June 2026, the report published on 29 June 2026 confirmed that “Nisai Virtual Academy Limited meets all the minimum standards for online education”. The Ofsted provider page lists the June 2026 accreditation visit.

Diploma: Nisai does not issue its own high school diploma in the American sense. Students work towards standard UK qualifications — GCSE, International GCSE, Functional Skills, AS and A Level — awarded by the exam boards (AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR). These are the same qualifications UK universities ask for. For US college admissions, A Levels and International GCSEs are widely used by international applicants, but the student will usually sit the exams at an exam centre, so plan that early.

Nisai Virtual Academy vs NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY vs two other options (official data)

Sources: nisai.com, Nisai Japan fee page, King’s InterHigh fees, Minerva Virtual Academy fees — all checked 6 October 2026. King’s InterHigh’s A Level and IB prices are based on three subjects; its fees page offers a VAT display option, so confirm the VAT basis there. Reviews and common concerns, answered honestly

Parent quotes on Nisai’s own pages describe children re-engaging with learning after difficult experiences at school. The questions families raise most often are practical ones:

“Why can’t I see the price?”

Because many places are commissioned by schools or local authorities and the mix of subjects and support varies, Nisai quotes individually. The Advice for Parents page says Nisai offers “transparent fee structures” matched to year and needs — so ask for the structure in writing.

“Is it a full school or a set of courses?”

Both are possible. Nisai calls itself a teacher-led online school, but the course list sells subjects separately, each with its own weekly live lessons. Decide whether you want a complete timetable or a few subjects alongside other study.

“Who arranges the exams?”

For UK students, the family or commissioning body. The course list is explicit that learners without an exam centre cannot achieve the qualification, and that exam centres are not obliged to accept private candidates. Sort this out before enrolling.

“Was the accreditation straightforward?”

Not on the first visit: the December 2025 report recorded two unmet curriculum standards (PE and creative education). The June 2026 report confirmed all minimum standards are met. Both reports are public.

“Will lessons fit our time zone?”

Clock times are not on nisai.com. Recordings help, but live participation is the point of the model, so check the timetable in your own time zone.

Alternatives to Nisai Virtual Academy worth comparing

  • King’s InterHigh — a full timetable with published annual and rolling fees and a large recording library. See our King’s InterHigh tuition review.
  • Minerva Virtual Academy — a DfE-accredited online secondary school with one all-in annual fee. See Minerva Virtual Academy fees.
  • NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY — an online international school for ages 6–18 focused on Asia and Oceania, opening September 2027 (planned), with free trial classes monthly from September 2026. Small live dialogue groups of about 8, subjects learned in English with a bilingual (English–Japanese) mentor, CEFR-based English levels and no entrance exam or English requirement. It can run alongside a local school. It is not yet accredited and has no graduates yet, and its Asia–Oceania timetable may not suit families in the Americas or Europe. See the curriculum and timetable.

If you are comparing US-style options too, our reviews of Connections Academy and Stanford Online High School follow the same format, and online vs in-person international school cost puts the numbers in context.

FAQ

How much does Nisai Virtual Academy cost per year?

UK fees are not published on the official site; Nisai quotes by age, year group, subjects, timetable and support, and some places are local-authority funded. Nisai’s Japan-facing site lists ¥264,000–¥316,800 per subject per year (primary to A Level, tax included). Exam fees are extra.

Is Nisai Virtual Academy accredited?

Yes. It is accredited under the DfE’s Online Education Accreditation Scheme; the Ofsted report published on 29 June 2026 confirmed it meets all minimum standards. It is also Section 41 approved and a Pearson Edexcel centre.

Can international students enrol?

Yes. Nisai Global School serves students outside the UK (ages 8–18 on its international pages) from Key Stage 2 to International GCSE and A Level. Ask about live-lesson times and exam arrangements in your country.

Is Nisai Virtual Academy worth it?

It depends on what you need. It is strongest for families who want live British teaching subject by subject, accredited provision and support for children who have struggled in mainstream school. If you need a published all-in price or a full fixed timetable, compare the alternatives above.

What are the alternatives?

King’s InterHigh and Minerva Virtual Academy are British online schools with published annual fees. NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY is an Asia–Oceania-focused online international school opening in September 2027 (planned), with no entrance exam.

Choosing calmly

Tuition and admissions details were checked on the official websites on 6 October 2026. Schools revise fees every year — always confirm on the official site before applying. With Nisai, the most useful next step is simple: ask for a written quote covering the full course, the live timetable in your time zone and the exam plan. Whatever you choose, the right school is the one whose week your child can actually live with.
