Forest Trail Academy Tuition & Review (2026–27): Costs and Alternatives

Forest Trail Academy tuition and review 2026–27

Forest Trail Academy tuition is $3,069 per year for elementary school (K–5), $3,669 per year for middle school (6–8) and $4,269 per year for high school (9–12) in its full-time “American school” program, while the full-time International School program is $4,995 per year at every level. Every enrolment also carries a $225 non-refundable registration fee (official tuition page, checked 29 September 2026). All prices are in US dollars. The tuition page lists these as “per grade level” rates and does not print a school-year label, so treat them as the prices currently charged for 2026–27 enrolments and confirm when you apply.

If you searched “Forest Trail Academy tuition” or “Forest Trail Academy review”, you probably want to know more than the headline number: which of the many price lines applies to your child, what the extra fees are, whether anyone actually teaches live, whether the diploma is accredited and recognised, and whether a family living outside the United States can enrol. This page answers each of those from the school’s own website, adds up a realistic total, and then compares Forest Trail Academy fairly with Excel High School, The Keystone School and NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY, a different kind of online school that opens in 2027.

The short answer: who Forest Trail Academy suits — and who it doesn’t

  • Suits: families who want a complete, accredited K–12 online school at a published, relatively modest price, with monthly payment plans for every full-time level.
  • Suits: students who need flexibility above all — athletes, performers, travelling families, students with medical needs. The school’s FAQ says it has open enrolment and “courses start the day you register”, with course lengths from 45 days to 12 months.
  • Suits: students abroad who want a US high school diploma without moving. The school says it accepts students worldwide, runs a separate International School program, and offers a “dual diploma” route alongside a local school.
  • Suits: older students who want to accelerate — the tuition page lists a High School & College Dual Diploma track (high school diploma plus an Associate of Arts degree) and $750 AP and dual-enrolment courses.
  • Harder fit: children who need live teaching. The official FAQ describes the courses as asynchronous and self-paced; teachers answer messages within 48 hours and give feedback within 72 hours rather than meeting a class at a set time.
  • Harder fit: younger children without an adult at home to structure the day. Self-paced online study works best when someone keeps the routine going.
  • Harder fit: families who want a written refund policy before looking at the school. The tuition page says to ask admissions before enrolling and they “will put the policy in writing for you” — it is not published on the site itself.

What Forest Trail Academy is

According to its “History and Accreditations” page, Forest Trail Academy was established in 2007 and is a K–12 online private school based in West Palm Beach, Florida. It describes its model as self-paced and asynchronous with rolling admissions, and says it currently enrols around 600 students, employs 25 teachers and 11 administrative and support staff, and has had more than 10,000 students and more than 800 graduates since it opened. It is registered with the Florida Department of Education (Palm Beach district) under School Code 3970.

The school offers two high school diplomas — College Prep and General Education — and says its courses align with Common Core and Florida B.E.S.T. standards. Beyond the core full-time program, the catalogue is wide: a K–8 correspondence (book) program in Christian and secular versions, individual and summer courses, credit recovery, Advanced Placement, an adaptive/prescriptive learning program, NCAA-approved courses, dual enrolment with college credit, and workforce certificates delivered with Arizona State University. A banner on the site also says it now accepts students using ESA (education savings account) funding from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Forest Trail Academy tuition and fees (2026–27, official)

Forest Trail Academy publishes its prices on a single Tuition and Payment Options page (checked 29 September 2026). The most important choice is between the “American” and the “International” school programs; the page lists them as separate price lines without defining exactly who is placed in which, so ask admissions which one applies to your family before you compare.

Program (self-paced) Price Payment plan (official)
Full-time American, K–5 $3,069 per grade level $480 down + $236 × 11 months
Full-time American, 6–8 $3,669 per grade level $530 down + $286 × 11 months
Full-time American, 9–12 $4,269 per grade level $580 down + $336 × 11 months
Semester American (K–5 / 6–8 / 9–12) $1,535 / $1,835 / $2,135 Down payment + 5 monthly payments
Full-time International, K–12 $4,995 per grade level $632 down + $397 × 11 months
Semester International, K–12 $2,498 per grade level $633 down + $373 × 5 months
Dual Diploma Reciprocity (international, with a local school) $4,995 per grade level $632 down + $397 × 11 months
Individual / summer / AP / dual-enrolment course $750 per course —
High School & College Dual Diploma $6,500 per year (American) · $7,500 per year (International) $1,000 down + $500 or $590 × 11 months
Adaptive / Prescriptive Learning $1,000 per grade level $300 down + $64 × 11 months
K–8 Correspondence (book) program $1,500 per grade level $750 down + $150 × 5 months
ASU Workforce Certificate $3,750 each $550 down + $291 × 11 months

Fees on top of tuition. The page lists a $225 non-refundable registration fee per student for every enrolment and re-enrolment; extension fees if coursework is not finished in time (1 week $100, 1 month $360, 3 months $800); a $35 re-activation fee for an inactive account; and an extra $50 if you pay by wire transfer. The school states: “If a fee is not on this page, we do not charge it.”

What tuition includes. The FAQ says that in the online program “all of the materials for your classes are provided online”, with any additional textbooks bought separately as optional supplements; in the correspondence program the books are included and mailed by UPS. A basic computer is needed, and some courses require software such as Microsoft Office or Adobe Reader.

Discounts. The sibling and military discount page lists a $250 reduction on each additional sibling’s tuition, and a $250 discount per child for active-duty US military families (military ID required); neither can be combined with other offers. The tuition page adds an early-bird offer of $250 off full-time enrolment for families who enrol before July 31. Need-based financial aid is not published on the official site; ESA funding is accepted from the six states named above.

Refunds. Not published on the official site. The tuition page says to ask admissions before you enrol and they will put the refund and withdrawal policy in writing. Do this — it is the one cost question the website does not answer.

A small detail in the payment plans. Adding up each plan gives a slightly higher figure than the headline price: $480 + ($236 × 11) = $3,076 for K–5, $580 + ($336 × 11) = $4,276 for high school, and $632 + ($397 × 11) = $5,000 for the International program. The difference is about $5–$7 a year, but it is worth confirming the exact schedule on your enrolment agreement.

Total-cost example (official prices only). Take a family in the United States with two children who will spend four years at Forest Trail: one starting grade 3, one starting grade 7, both paying in full.

  • Child A (grades 3–6): $3,069 × 3 + $3,669 = $12,876
  • Child B (grades 7–10): $3,669 × 2 + $4,269 × 2 = $15,876
  • Registration: $225 × 2 children × 4 years = $1,800
  • Total before discounts: $12,876 + $15,876 + $1,800 = $30,552 for eight student-years, or about $3,819 per child per year. The $250 sibling discount would reduce this if applied at each annual enrolment; ask admissions how it is applied.
  • The same two children in the International program: $4,995 × 8 + $1,800 = $41,760.

For context on how these figures compare with other online schools, see our Online International Schools Compared guide and our breakdown of online vs in-person international school cost.

How a school day works: schedule, live classes and time zones

There is no fixed school day at Forest Trail Academy. The official FAQ describes the courses as asynchronous: “a course without a set start date, where students start at different times and work at their own pace.” A student logs in to the learning platform, works through lessons, and submits four types of assessment — assignments and essays (uploaded), worksheets (typed in) and quizzes/tests (multiple choice or true/false). Multiple-choice results appear immediately; essay questions are graded by a teacher within 72 hours.

A full load is six credits, and the FAQ says students can take from half a credit to six credits at a time (more with an advisor’s approval). Each course has a start and end date on the student’s dashboard, ranging from 45 days to 12 months. Students are asked to submit one assignment at a time per course and wait for the teacher’s feedback before sending the next, and must complete all assessments to earn a grade and credit. If the end date passes, the paid extensions listed above apply.

Live classes: none are described as part of the core program. Time zones: because there are no scheduled lessons, a family in Sydney, London or Los Angeles can study at any hour. The school’s office hours are listed as Monday–Friday 9am–6pm and Saturday 12pm–4pm (the school is in Florida, US Eastern time; the time zone is not stated next to the hours). The trade-off is that help arrives in writing — the FAQ sets a 48-hour target for replies to messages — rather than in real time. The site also mentions academic counselling and online clubs; how often these meet is not published on the official site.

If you are not sure whether self-paced study suits your child, our guide to how an online international school works day to day compares the asynchronous and live-class models.

Accreditation, diploma and college recognition

The History and Accreditations page lists four bodies: Cognia (the parent of the former NCA CASI, NWAC and SACS CASI regional agencies), MSA-CESS (Middle States Association – Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools), Accreditation International (Ai) and the National Council for Private School Accreditation, with links to certificates. A school news post says the Cognia Global Commission accreditation was awarded in June 2022. The accreditation page itself states the Cognia action was approved “at its meeting on June 30, 2027” — a date still in the future at the time of checking, so check the linked certificate or Cognia’s own directory for the current term. The school is also registered with the College Board and ACT (code 102800).

Diploma requirements. The College Prep diploma requires 24 credits and the General Education diploma 21 credits. The General diploma page lists 4 English, 4 mathematics, 3 science, 4 history, 1 fine arts, 0.5 health, 0.5 personal fitness and 4+ electives. At least 25% of graduation credits must be earned at Forest Trail itself — roughly one year’s worth — so a student cannot transfer in almost everything and collect a diploma in a few weeks.

Transfer credits. Forest Trail accepts credits from other schools with a minimum grade of D, counts those grades in the GPA, and keeps the final decision on what transfers. Whether another school accepts Forest Trail credits is decided by that receiving school — true of every online school.

College recognition. The school publishes a college and university acceptance list of institutions where graduates have been admitted, and states that more than 95% of graduates go on to four-year colleges and universities. The list is cumulative and undated, so read it as a record of where graduates have been admitted, not a single year’s outcomes. For athletes, most core courses are listed as NCAA-approved; the school notes that the NCAA itself decides each student-athlete’s eligibility.

International recognition. For students abroad, the school offers an apostille service for its documents, and international applicants must provide authenticated official transcripts, translated through a NACES-member evaluation service where needed. Whether a US online-school diploma is accepted for university entry in your country is decided by that country’s universities — check with the universities your child is likely to apply to.

Reviews and common concerns, answered honestly

Parent and student comments about self-paced online schools, including Forest Trail Academy, tend to return to the same handful of themes. Here is what the school officially says about each, so you can judge for yourself.

“Is it legitimate — is the diploma real?”

Forest Trail is registered with the Florida Department of Education and lists accreditation from Cognia, MSA-CESS and Accreditation International, with certificates linked from its site. Those are established K–12 accreditors. Because of the date typo mentioned above, the tidy step is to look the school up in Cognia’s public directory yourself before enrolling.

“Will my child get enough teacher contact?”

This is the most common question with any asynchronous school. Forest Trail’s written standard is a reply to messages within 48 hours and feedback on work within 72 hours, with an escalation route to Student Services if that is missed. That suits an independent learner; a child who needs a teacher to explain things face-to-face may find it thin.

“Motivation and deadlines”

Self-pacing cuts both ways. Each course has an end date, and extensions cost $100–$800. The school’s own advice is to set a schedule that fits your goal. Families who do well usually agree a weekly plan at home from the first day.

“Why two different prices?”

The American and International programs are priced differently ($3,069–$4,269 vs $4,995 per year), and the tuition page does not explain the eligibility rules. Ask admissions which applies to you in writing, especially if you are an American family living abroad.

“What if it doesn’t work out?”

The refund and withdrawal policy is not published on the site; the school offers to put it in writing before you enrol. Ask for it, and check how the $225 registration fee and any payment-plan balance are treated.

Alternatives to Forest Trail Academy worth comparing

Excel High School is a close match if your child is in grades 6–12: also self-paced and accredited by Cognia and MSA-CESS, with tiered 2026/27 plans and single courses from $325. It does not serve elementary grades. The Keystone School, founded in 1974 and now part of Stride/K12, covers PreK–12, charges per course and offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for new students. We cover each in detail in our Excel High School tuition and review and Keystone School tuition and review pages; if you are also weighing a larger provider, see our page on Pearson Online Academy tuition.

NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY (NGA) is a different kind of option rather than a like-for-like replacement. It is an online international school for ages 6–18 focused on Asia and Oceania, opening in September 2027 (planned), with a first cohort of 100 students. Instead of self-paced modules, children learn in small live dialogue groups of about eight, study subjects in English with a bilingual (English–Japanese) mentor, and take part in social co-creation projects with companies and governments and in international exchange. There is no entrance exam and no English requirement, it can run alongside a local school or as the main school, and it travels with the family. Tuition is not yet published; NGA says it will be far more affordable than a typical international school, with no enrolment, facility or uniform fees, materials included and sibling discounts. Be clear about the limits too: NGA is not yet open, not yet accredited, has no graduates or track record, and its timetable is built for Asia and Oceania daytime — for families in the Americas or Europe, live classes may fall outside their day. Its operator runs a sister alternative school in Japan, NIJIN Academy, with more than 1,000 students. You can read more on the NGA curriculum and timetable page.

FAQ

How much does Forest Trail Academy cost per year?

Full-time tuition in the American program is $3,069 (K–5), $3,669 (6–8) or $4,269 (9–12) per year; the International program is $4,995 per year at every level. Add a $225 non-refundable registration fee per student per enrolment. Individual courses are $750 each (official tuition page, checked 29 September 2026).

Is Forest Trail Academy accredited?

Yes. The school lists accreditation from Cognia, MSA-CESS and Accreditation International, plus NCPSA, and is registered with the Florida Department of Education (School Code 3970). It issues College Prep (24-credit) and General Education (21-credit) diplomas.

Can international students enrol?

Yes. The FAQ says “we accept students worldwide”. There is a separate International School program at $4,995 per year and a dual-diploma route for students also attending a local school. Transcripts must be authenticated and, where needed, evaluated by a NACES-member service. An English-level requirement is not published on the official site.

Is Forest Trail Academy worth it?

It depends on how your child learns. For an independent, motivated student who needs to study at any hour and wants an accredited US diploma at a published, moderate price, it offers a lot. For a child who needs live teaching, daily contact with classmates or close teacher guidance, a live-class school may fit better even at a similar cost.

What are the alternatives?

Excel High School (self-paced, grades 6–12) and The Keystone School (self-paced, PreK–12) are the closest like-for-like options. If you want live small-group classes, bilingual support and an Asia–Oceania focus — and can wait for a school that opens in 2027 — NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY is a different kind of option to look at.

Choosing calmly

Forest Trail Academy is an established, accredited, flexible school with a clear price list, and for many families that is exactly what they need. The questions worth asking before you sign are simple: which program price applies to you, how refunds work, and whether your child will thrive with written rather than live teacher support. Tuition and admissions details were checked on the official websites on 29 September 2026. Schools revise fees every year — always confirm on the official site before applying. Whatever you choose, take your time; the right school is the one that fits your child, not the one that fits the spreadsheet.
