K12 Private Academy Tuition & Review (2026–27): Costs and Alternatives

K12 Private Academy tuition and review 2026–27

K12 Private Academy tuition for the 2026–27 school year is $5,995 a year for full-time elementary school, $6,995 for middle school and $7,995 for high school. Pre-K costs $4,495, and the Shine Pathway for grades 6–9 costs $10,000. Part-time students pay per course, from $1,150 a year for elementary school to $1,350 for high school. Full-time families get a 10% sibling discount on additional children (official tuition page, checked 6 October 2026). The school is the tuition-based private online school of Stride, Inc., the company formerly called K12 Inc. It is accredited by Cognia, its courses are NCAA-approved, and it awards a US high school diploma.

If you searched “K12 Private Academy tuition” or “K12 Private Academy review”, you probably want more than a price list. You want to know what the fee covers, what costs extra, how much time a parent spends each day, when the live classes run, and whether your country is one the school can enrol from. That last point surprises many families: the school states that it cannot enrol students living in the United Kingdom, Ireland, most EU countries, Norway, Iceland, China or India. This page brings the official facts together, explains the trade-offs honestly, and compares K12 Private Academy with Stride’s free public option, Laurel Springs School and NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY. NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY is a different kind of online international school that opens in 2027.

The short answer: who K12 Private Academy suits — and who it doesn’t

  • Suits: families who want an accredited US private school online at a published, mid-range price. Full-time tuition runs from $4,495 to $7,995 a year, and the textbooks and instructional materials for full-time students are included.
  • Suits: families who do not qualify for a free K12-powered public school, for example because they live in a state without one or live abroad in an eligible country. The school says it does not charge international students a premium.
  • Suits: students who want a US diploma with AP courses and college counselling. The high school lists “150+ standard courses and nearly 40 electives” and NCAA-approved courses.
  • Suits: families who need to start mid-year. The 2026–27 calendar lists twelve start dates, from August 2026 to March 2027.
  • Harder fit: families living in the UK, Ireland, most of the EU, Norway, Iceland, China or India. The school’s own pages say it cannot enrol students from these countries.
  • Harder fit: households where no adult is free during the day for a young child. The elementary page says parents spend an average of four to six hours a day supporting their child.
  • Harder fit: families who need a free option and live in a state with a tuition-free K12-powered public school. That public school may cover the same need at no tuition cost.

What K12 Private Academy is

K12 Private Academy (often shortened to K12PA) describes itself as “a fully accredited online private PK–12 school”. It is run by Stride, Inc.; the school website’s footer notes that K12 Inc. changed its corporate name to Stride, Inc. in December 2020. Stride’s main site, k12.com, lists K12 Private Academy as one of six “K12-powered” private schools, next to The George Washington University Online High School, Grand Canyon Private Academy, The Keystone School, Marian University Preparatory School and Coast to Mountains Preparatory Academy.

The important distinction is between Stride’s public and private schools. Stride’s K12-powered online public schools are tuition-free for students who live in a participating US state. K12 Private Academy is the paid private school: any eligible family can enrol, wherever they live in the United States, and families in many other countries can enrol too. If you want to understand the free public side, our Stride K12 tuition and review page explains who qualifies.

Three key facts about K12 Private Academy: published tuition from 4,495 to 10,000 dollars a year, an accredited US diploma, and a list of countries it cannot enrol from
Three facts to check first: the price band, the diploma and whether your country is eligible.

K12 Private Academy tuition and fees (2026–27, official)

K12 Private Academy publishes its tuition openly, which many private online schools do not. The figures below are copied from the official Tuition & Benefits page, which is headed “SY 2026–2027” (checked 6 October 2026). Full-time students can take up to six courses per semester.

Full-time program Per year Per semester
Pre-K $4,495 $2,695
Elementary school $5,995 $3,595
Middle school $6,995 $4,195
High school $7,995 $4,795
Shine Pathway (grades 6–9) $10,000 $6,000
Career and College Prep (full-time) $25 administrative fee
Dual Enrollment (grades 9–12, GPA 3.0 or higher) $750 additional fee

Part-time students can take up to three courses per semester and pay per course. The page shows a tuition update “beginning with the 2026–2027 school year” (from August 2026):

Part-time (per course) Per year Per semester
Elementary school $1,150 $625
Middle school $1,250 $675
High school $1,350 $725
Career and College Prep (part-time) $200 in the first year

The same page still shows an earlier part-time table of $900 a year ($450 a semester) per course for all grade levels. It explains that rates were updated for 2026–27 “to better reflect market value, expanded academic supports, and continued investment”. If you are enrolling for 2026–27, use the updated table and confirm the rate with an enrollment consultant.

What is included, and what costs extra

  • Included (full-time): the school’s FAQ says it “provides textbooks and instructional materials for students”, which vary by grade. The elementary page lists hands-on kits such as maths manipulatives, science equipment and art supplies.
  • Not included (part-time): a footnote says the part-time course price “does not include physical materials”.
  • Shine Pathway: the Shine page says tuition includes “a full-time course load, loaner laptop, materials, course extensions, term date changes, accelerations, and summer school if needed”.
  • Transcripts: official transcripts are requested through Parchment, and the FAQ says “a fee may apply”. The amount is not published on the official site.
  • Application or enrolment fee: Not published on the official site.
  • Refund and withdrawal policy: Not published on the official site pages we checked. Ask for it in writing before you pay.
  • Payment plans: described as “flexible options available upon request”. The terms are not published on the official site.

Discounts and scholarships

Full-time families get a sibling discount of “10% on tuition costs for additional children” enrolled at the same time. The page also lists state programmes that eligible residents may use towards tuition: Arizona ESA, Arkansas EFA, the Alabama CHOOSE Act, New Hampshire EFA, South Carolina ESTF and the West Virginia Hope Scholarship. A separate scholarship programme page exists; its amounts are not published on the tuition page.

Worked examples using only official numbers

One high school student for four years. At the 2026–27 rate, $7,995 × 4 = $31,980. That total assumes the rate never rises. Future-year tuition is not published, and the school raised part-time rates for 2026–27, so plan for possible increases.

Two children for one year (one in elementary, one in middle school). Full price would be $5,995 + $6,995 = $12,990. The page does not say which child receives the 10% discount. If it applies to the middle school child, that child’s tuition becomes $6,995 × 0.9 = $6,295.50, and the family total is $5,995 + $6,295.50 = $12,290.50 before any state scholarship. Confirm how the discount is applied when you speak to an enrollment consultant.

A part-time high school student taking two courses for a year. $1,350 × 2 = $2,700, plus the $200 Career and College Prep fee if they take that track in the first year, plus physical materials.

For context on how these figures compare with campus schools, see our guide to online vs in-person international school costs.

How a school day works: schedule, live classes and time zones

K12 Private Academy mixes self-paced work with live teaching. The school says students “can access the online learning system at any time, any day of the week”. At high school level, it says “classes are taught at scheduled times in a virtual classroom”, with teachers using live “Class Connect” sessions for direct instruction. Elementary pages also mention live Class Connect sessions.

What the official site does not publish is just as important for families abroad:

  • Live class times and time zone: Not published on the official site. The international page says “you can choose when to take your classes. If you’re able, you can join live classes, or you can watch recordings later.” Families outside US time zones should expect to rely partly on recordings, and should ask which sessions are only offered live.
  • Number and length of live sessions per week: Not published on the official site.
  • Hours per day for the student: Not published on the official K12 Private Academy site.

The parent’s role is published, but two pages describe it differently. The general FAQ says a “parent, guardian, or another trusted adult” acts as Learning Coach, and that pre-K to grade 2 needs one to two hours of active support a day, with independence growing in later grades. The elementary school page says parents of elementary children “spend an average of four to six hours supporting their child’s education each school day”. The difference may reflect “active teaching” versus total supervision time. Either way, a young child needs an adult nearby for a real part of the day. Parents also log attendance and monitor progress.

High school students get “subject-specific teachers, academic coaches, and counselors”, and the school says every high school teacher is certified. There are student clubs and an esports alliance for social life online. If you are new to this format, our guide to how a day at an online international school works describes a typical routine.

Accreditation, diploma and college recognition

The official accreditation page (checked 6 October 2026) lists:

  • Cognia, the global accreditation organisation formed from AdvancED and Measured Progress.
  • SACS CASI, which the page describes as “an accreditation division of Advancing Excellence in Education (AdvancED)”.
  • NCAA: many courses are approved for athletic eligibility. Student-athletes can check the course list in the NCAA database with CEEB code 471067.

We did not independently open the Cognia directory entry for this page; families who need certainty, such as for a university or a visa file, can search Cognia’s directory directly.

The school issues “a U.S. high school diploma that is accepted by schools, colleges, universities, and employers”. According to the US diploma page, the diploma needs at least 24 credits: 4 English, 4 maths, 4 science (2 lab sciences), 4 history (including 1 US history), 2 world languages in the same language, 0.5 health, 0.5 PE and 5 electives. Transfer credits are considered case by case, must come from a public school or accredited private school, and require an official transcript. International records may need translation and evaluation. Transfer students must complete at least six credits (one full year) at K12 Private Academy to earn its diploma.

College outcomes: the school says “many of our students have gone on to top universities and colleges worldwide”. A list of named universities or acceptance statistics is not published on the official site.

K12 Private Academy vs NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY vs two other options (official data)

The two other options are Stride K12, whose public schools are free for eligible state residents, and Laurel Springs School, a long-running accredited private online school. NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY (NGA) is included as a different kind of school: it opens in September 2027, is built around Asia and Oceania, and does not yet have accreditation or graduates.

Laurel Springs accreditation, schedule and admission rows are from its official site as checked on 22 September 2026 for our Laurel Springs School tuition and review. NGA facts are from NGA’s tuition and admissions page.

Reading the table fairly: K12 Private Academy has what NGA does not yet have — accreditation, a US diploma, the backing of Stride’s K12 platform, published prices and a schedule that suits North American families. NGA’s differences are no entrance exam, small live dialogue groups, bilingual support for children still learning English and an Asia–Oceania timetable. For a family in the Americas or Europe, NGA’s live classes may fall outside local daytime, which is a real limitation.

Reviews and common concerns, answered honestly

Parent reviews of large online schools are mixed, and recurring themes matter more than single stories. Below are the questions families most often raise, with what the official site says.

“Is it the same as the free K12 public school?”

No. Both use Stride’s K12 courses and platform, but the public schools are free and limited to residents of participating states, while K12 Private Academy charges tuition and accepts students more widely. The private school also describes smaller high school classes (“closer to 15”, compared with “up to 30” in public schools). If you qualify for a free public option, compare the two carefully before paying.

“How much parent time does it really take?”

For young children, a lot. The official pages describe one to two hours of active support a day for pre-K to grade 2, and an average of four to six hours of parent support a day across elementary school. Older students work more independently, with teachers, academic coaches and counsellors.

“Can we join from outside the United States?”

Often yes, but not from everywhere. The international page says students are enrolled in “over 60 unique countries” and that there is no premium for international students. However, the school lists countries it cannot enrol from, including the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, the Nordic countries, China and India. Check the current list before you apply. Live class times for other time zones are not published, so recordings may play a bigger role.

“Will tuition go up?”

Part-time rates rose for 2026–27, from $900 to $1,150–$1,350 per course per year. Future rates are not published. Budget for possible changes if you plan several years ahead.

“What if it doesn’t work out?”

The refund and withdrawal terms are not published on the official site pages we checked. Ask for the written policy, including the deadline for a full or partial refund, before paying tuition.

Alternatives to K12 Private Academy worth comparing

  • Stride K12 public schools — if you live in a participating US state, a K12-powered public school may give a similar day with no tuition. See our Stride K12 review.
  • Laurel Springs School — a private online school with WASC and Cognia accreditation and a mainly self-paced model, at a higher price point. See our Laurel Springs School review. Pearson’s private option is another one to price; see Pearson Online Academy tuition.
  • NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY — an online international school for ages 6–18, focused on Asia and Oceania, opening in September 2027 (planned). It has no entrance exam and no English requirement. Children learn subjects in English in small live dialogue groups of about eight, with a bilingual (English–Japanese) mentor and CEFR-based English levels. It can run alongside a local school or as the main school, and it travels with the family if they move. Tuition is not yet published; NGA says it will be far more affordable than a typical international school, with no enrolment, facility or uniform fees, materials included and sibling discounts. It is not yet accredited and has no graduates yet. Free trial classes run monthly from September 2026. Curriculum details are on the curriculum and timetable page.

FAQ

How much does K12 Private Academy cost per year?

For 2026–27, full-time tuition is $4,495 for pre-K, $5,995 for elementary, $6,995 for middle school and $7,995 for high school. The Shine Pathway (grades 6–9) is $10,000. Part-time courses cost $1,150 to $1,350 per course per year. Full-time siblings get 10% off tuition for additional children (official site, checked 6 October 2026).

Is K12 Private Academy accredited?

Yes. The official site lists Cognia and SACS CASI (an AdvancED division), and NCAA-approved courses under CEEB code 471067. It awards a US high school diploma with a 24-credit minimum.

Can international students enrol?

Yes, from many countries and without a price premium. The school cannot enrol students living in the UK, Ireland, most EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, China, India or embargoed regions. Live class times for other time zones are not published; recordings are available.

Is K12 Private Academy worth it?

It depends on what you need. Its strengths are an accredited US diploma, published mid-range tuition, included materials for full-time students and many start dates. The trade-offs are significant parent time for younger children, unpublished live class times and refund terms, and a list of countries it cannot serve. If you qualify for a free K12-powered public school, compare that first.

What are the alternatives?

Stride K12’s tuition-free public schools for eligible US state residents, Laurel Springs School, Pearson Online Academy and, for families in Asia and Oceania who want small live groups and bilingual support, NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY (opening September 2027, not yet accredited).

Choosing calmly

There is no single right online school, only a good fit for one child and one family’s day. If K12 Private Academy matches your country, your budget and the time you can give, it is a well-documented choice with clear published prices. If you are in Asia or Oceania and want small live classes with bilingual support, you are welcome to follow NGA as it prepares to open, and to judge it by its trial classes before deciding anything.

Tuition and admissions details were checked on the official websites on 6 October 2026. Schools revise fees every year — always confirm on the official site before applying.
