Affordable Accredited Online High School Options: 6 US Diplomas Families Abroad Can Use

Key visual for a guide to six affordable accredited online high schools for families living abroad

If your teenager needs a US high school diploma but you live in Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok or Sydney, the first schools you find tend to be the famous ones, at $20,000 to $30,000 a year. The good news is that an affordable accredited online high school does exist. Several private online schools publish full-year prices of around $2,000 to $5,000 and award a recognised US diploma, and most of them accept students who live outside the United States.

This guide lists six of them, using only what each school publishes on its official website, checked in October 2026: Excel High School, Penn Foster High School, The Keystone School, BYU Online High School, Forest Trail Academy and Florida Virtual School (FLVS). For each one we cover the tuition, the accrediting body, whether international students can enrol, whether learning is live or self-paced, and what a family living in Asia should check before paying. One of the six, as you will see, does not award a diploma at all — which is exactly why it is worth reading past the price.

What makes an affordable accredited online high school worth it

Before comparing prices, it helps to agree on three things to look for. They change how you read every number below.

A diploma, not just courses. Some US online schools sell individual courses and issue a transcript, which your current school may or may not accept. Others award their own high school diploma once a student completes the required credits. If you need the diploma itself, a cheap course-only provider will not get you there.

Recognised accreditation. All six schools here hold accreditation from Cognia, the Middle States Association (MSA-CESS) or WASC, the accreditors that US colleges and many overseas universities look for. Accreditation does not guarantee admission anywhere, but an unaccredited diploma closes many doors.

Self-paced by design. Low prices usually mean asynchronous learning: no fixed class times, which is ideal across time zones, but very different from a school where a child meets teachers and classmates every day. If you want to see what a structured online school day looks like instead, read our guide to what an accredited online international school is.

Chart of published annual tuition at affordable accredited online high schools: Excel High School from $1,950 a year, The Keystone School $1,800 to $2,900 a year full time, and BYU Online High School $4,280 a year

The schools charge in different ways — per year, per course or per programme — so a straight line-up can mislead. Over four years, Excel’s Silver plan comes to $7,800 in tuition, while BYU Online High School’s Standard track comes to about $17,400 once its $50 application fee and annual $50 enrolment fee are included.

Six affordable accredited online high schools for families abroad

1. Excel High School — the clearest price list, from $1,950 a year

Excel is a tuition-based private online school. Its 2026/27 high school plans are Silver at $1,950 a year (six credits), Gold at $2,500 (up to eight credits, with Honors or California A-G courses) and Platinum at $4,900 (up to ten credits, with AP). Single courses start at $325, and annual plans can be spread over ten interest-free payments. Excel states it is accredited by Cognia and the Middle States Association.

Excel openly welcomes international students. Applicants need English at roughly a US 8th-grade level; no TOEFL score is required. Learning is fully self-paced, up to 75% of credits can be transferred in from a previous school, and at least six credits must be earned at Excel. Our full Excel High School tuition review breaks down every plan and fee.

2. Penn Foster High School — the lowest total programme price

Penn Foster prices its high school as one programme: $1,639 in total at the regular rate, with monthly plans from $55. (When we checked on 4 October 2026, the official site was also advertising a pay-in-full price of $1,089 until 14 October 2026.) Penn Foster High School is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association, and also accredited by Cognia and the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC).

There are no scheduled class times, due dates or deadlines. Students must be at least 13 and have completed 8th grade. The official pages we checked do not say whether students living outside the US can enrol, so ask admissions directly before planning around it.

3. The Keystone School — build a year course by course

Keystone is a K–12 private online school that charges per course. Its official guide puts full-time enrolment at $1,800 to $2,900 a year, with full-year courses from $400 and a 5–10% discount for five or six courses bought together by phone. It is accredited by Cognia and MSA-CESS.

Two points matter for families abroad. Keystone publishes a list of countries it cannot accept enrolments from — including China, India, Myanmar, the United Kingdom and much of the EU (Japan is not on it). And its pricing page states that, because of US Treasury requirements, it cannot refund students with a non-US address. See our Keystone School tuition review for worked totals.

4. BYU Online High School — a university-run school with a live option

Run by Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, BYU Online High School charges full-time students $4,280 a year ($2,140 a semester) on the Standard Diploma Track and $5,010 on the Advanced track for 2026–27, plus a one-time $50 application fee and a $50 annual fee. It holds Cognia and Middle States accreditation, and says its courses are available in most countries.

It is the only school on this list that lets students mix live Semester Live classes on a set schedule with self-paced Flex On Demand courses. Class times are not published, and a daytime class in Utah falls late at night in most of Asia. Do not confuse it with BYU Independent Study, a separate catalogue of single self-paced courses from $229 per semester course, whose credits are designed to transfer to a student’s own school; the diploma programme is BYU Online High School. Our BYU Independent Study and Online High School review separates the two.

5. Forest Trail Academy — an international programme and a dual diploma

Forest Trail Academy, based in West Palm Beach, Florida, lists its full-time US high school at $4,269 a year and its International programme at $4,995 a year at every grade, each with a $225 non-refundable registration fee per enrolment. It cites Cognia, MSA-CESS and Accreditation International (Ai).

Its distinctive option is a Dual Diploma programme in which credits from a student’s local school count toward a Forest Trail diploma. Note the line on its own tuition page: Cognia no longer validates the dual diploma option, although its other accreditors do. If your university route depends on Cognia, check carefully. More detail is in our Forest Trail Academy tuition review.

6. Florida Virtual School (FLVS) — excellent for single courses, no diploma

FLVS is free for Florida residents. Families outside Florida or outside the US take its courses through the tuition-based FlexPoint Virtual School (formerly known as FLVS Global School) at $475 per course, per semester, or $350 for credit recovery. FlexPoint sits under FLVS’s Cognia accreditation and is also accredited by ACS WASC.

FlexPoint’s own FAQ is clear, however: it does not issue a high school diploma at this time. It is a strong choice for adding an AP class or a subject your school lacks, provided a diploma-granting school accepts the credit. Our Florida Virtual School tuition review explains the three FLVS routes.

What all six share is a self-paced, low-cost design. What they mostly leave out is regular, scheduled time with teachers and classmates. If that matters to your child, our online school curriculum overview shows a different approach.

Choosing an affordable accredited online high school from Asia

Three steps for choosing an affordable accredited online high school from Asia: confirm it awards a diploma, confirm you can enrol and sit exams from where you live, and confirm the diploma works for the universities you are aiming at

Time zones. Self-paced coursework can be done at any hour, but teacher replies and help desks generally run on US business hours. Plan on next-day answers.

Exams and proctoring. Some courses require supervised exams. BYU Independent Study, for example, ships paper exams to a certified proctor or testing centre the student names, and charges $20 extra per international shipment. Find out who could proctor for you locally before you enrol.

Country rules and refunds. Check the school’s country restrictions and refund terms for every country you might live in during high school, not just the current one.

Recognition at home. If your child may apply to universities in Japan or elsewhere in Asia, check how they treat a US online diploma. Japan’s education ministry, for instance, lists completion of a 12-year foreign school course, or of a 12-year course at an institution accredited by bodies such as Cognia or WASC, among its university entrance qualifications — but it does not spell out how online study is treated, so ask the admissions office early. For the wider picture, see American online schools for international students.

Three schools and NGA, side by side

Table comparing Excel High School, The Keystone School, BYU Online High School and NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY on published tuition, enrolment from Asia, US diploma, live classes with classmates and accreditation

These schools do one job very well: a recognised diploma, at a price many families can manage, on the student’s own schedule. They are not designed to replace the daily community of a school, and that is not a criticism — it is simply a different product from the premium live-class schools.

Where NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY fits

NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY (NGA) is an online international school scheduled to open in September 2027. It is a different kind of thing from the six programmes above: rather than a diploma-only, self-paced course catalogue, NGA is built around small live classes, real conversation with teachers and classmates, and a school community. There is no test-score-based entrance exam.

To be honest about where we are: NGA has not opened yet, has no graduates and is not claiming accreditation. Fees will be announced with our opening information. If your goal is the fastest, cheapest route to a US diploma, one of the schools above may suit you better. If you want your child to learn to like themselves and the world, in a place where they belong, NGA may be worth a look.

FAQ

What is the cheapest accredited online high school for international students?

By published price, Penn Foster High School ($1,639 for the whole programme) and Excel High School (from $1,950 a year) are the lowest on this list. Excel explicitly accepts international students; Penn Foster’s international eligibility is not stated on the pages we checked, so confirm with admissions.

Can students in Asia enrol in these schools?

Excel, BYU Online High School and Forest Trail Academy describe enrolment for students abroad. The Keystone School excludes a published list of countries, which includes China and India but not Japan (checked October 2026). Always confirm current rules before paying.

Does FLVS give international students a diploma?

No. FlexPoint Virtual School, the FLVS route for students outside Florida, states that it does not issue a high school diploma at this time. Its credits count where a diploma-granting school accepts them.

Will universities accept a diploma from an online high school?

Many do, especially when the school is accredited by Cognia, MSA-CESS or WASC, but each university sets its own rules. Contact the admissions offices you are interested in early, particularly outside the US.

A low price is only good value if it gets you where you want to go

A US diploma for around $2,000 a year is a real opportunity. Check three things first — does it award a diploma, can you enrol and sit exams from where you live, and will it be recognised where your child wants to go next — and an affordable school stays a good decision long after enrolment.

NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY is scheduled to open in September 2027, with trial classes planned for April and May 2027. We will share our curriculum, timetable and fees by email as they are confirmed.

There is no need to decide today. Open one of these schools’ tuition pages with your teenager and talk about what kind of school life they want.
