Alpha School Tuition & Review 2026–27: Costs by Campus and Alternatives

Alpha School tuition is set campus by campus. On the official Locations page, annual tuition runs from $10,000 (Brownsville, Texas) to $75,000 (San Francisco and Palo Alto), with the flagship Austin campus listed at $40,000 per year and most campuses between $40,000 and $65,000 (alpha.school/locations, checked 22 September 2026). A few newer campuses show “Contact” instead of a price. The Locations page does not say which school year those prices apply to, so confirm the year and payment schedule with admissions.

If you searched “alpha school tuition” or “alpha school review”, you probably want the rest of the picture too. What does the fee cover? What does a “2-hour learning” day actually look like? Is the school accredited? Is there an online version for families who don’t live near a campus? This guide answers those questions from Alpha School’s own pages and puts it side by side with three other options, one of which is our own school, NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY. We tried to write Alpha’s strengths as fairly as its trade-offs.

The short answer: who Alpha School suits — and who it doesn’t

• Suits families living near one of the listed campuses who want an in-person, full-day private school where core academics are compressed into about two hours of adaptive software a day.
• Suits children who are motivated by visible progress, goals and rewards. Alpha describes mastery-based learning with “Alpha Coins”, streaks and progress dashboards.
• Suits parents who value life-skills afternoons (public speaking, entrepreneurship, leadership, financial literacy) as much as test scores.
• Suits families who can budget $40,000–$75,000 per child per year at most campuses. Brownsville ($10,000) is the main exception.
• Less suited to families outside the US or far from a campus. The FAQ states Alpha is an in-person school, and its online program, Alpha Anywhere, has enrolment “paused through the end of 2026”.
• Less suited to parents who want a long, independent research record for the model. Alpha publishes its own MAP Growth results, but the approach is still new.
• Less suited to children who need a lot of support in English. Instruction is in English and the admissions page doesn’t mention language support.

What Alpha School is

Alpha School is a US private school network that started in Austin, Texas, in 2014. Its model is called 2 Hour Learning. Each morning, students work through core academics (maths, reading, language and science) on adaptive, AI-supported software that only moves them forward once they’ve mastered a topic. The rest of the school day goes to workshops and projects. Adults on campus are called guides rather than teachers. The FAQ says guides focus on motivation, mentoring and coaching, and that they’re paid a starting salary of $100,000.

The network has grown quickly. The Locations page now lists more than 40 campuses across the US, including Texas, California, Florida, New York, Illinois, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Colorado, Utah, Tennessee, Washington, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Arizona and Puerto Rico. Most serve K–8. A few (Brownsville, Santa Barbara, New York, Miami, Raleigh and San Francisco) are listed as K–12. High school in Austin runs as Alpha High.

Alpha School tuition and fees (2026–27, official)

Alpha doesn’t have one national price. Each campus has its own annual tuition, published on the Locations page. Here is the full list as shown on 22 September 2026. The page doesn’t state the school year, but several campuses on it are opening for 2026–27.

Other fees, what’s included and discounts

• Application fee: $100 per student, non-refundable (Admissions page).
• Enrolment deposit: $1,000 to secure a place. It is deducted from the tuition balance, so it isn’t an extra cost.
• Sibling discount: 5% off tuition for the second child and beyond.
• What’s included: the FAQ says tuition is “inclusive of ALL student activities”, including trips, and that Alpha will not ask parents to fundraise.
• Financial aid: current need-based aid terms are not published on the official site. Ask the admissions coordinator.
• Scholarships: Alpha High advertises full, merit-based scholarships worth $40,000 per year for 2026–27, renewable for four years while the student stays eligible, with limited places (Alpha High Scholarship).
• Uniforms, meals, transport, before/after care: not published on the official site.

Total-cost example (official numbers only)

Say a family enrols two children at the Austin campus for four years at the listed $40,000. With the 5% discount, the second child’s tuition is $38,000. That’s $40,000 + $38,000 = $78,000 a year. Over four years, $78,000 × 4 = $312,000, plus $200 in application fees (the $1,000 deposits come off tuition). The same two children at a $65,000 campus would cost $65,000 + $61,750 = $126,750 a year, or $507,000 over four years. This example assumes tuition stays flat. In practice schools usually review fees every year, so treat these figures as a floor.

How a school day works: schedule, live classes and time zones

A common misunderstanding is that Alpha students are only in school for two hours. The FAQ says they attend a full day. Core academics take “about two hours” on personalised, mastery-based software. The rest of the day covers leadership workshops, public speaking, entrepreneurship, teamwork, physical activity and creative problem-solving. At the Austin campus the official schedule is 8:15 AM to 4:00 PM. Drop-off is 8:15–8:30 AM, pick-up is 3:30–4:00 PM, and the day includes at least 1 hour 15 minutes of outdoor play, weather permitting.

High school is organised a little differently. Alpha High describes 3-hour morning academic sessions, with afternoons for its AlphaX programme or students’ own interests.

Because Alpha is an in-person school, time zones only matter for its online programme. On 29 May 2026, Alpha’s blog announced that Alpha Anywhere, its at-home version with the same academics, was “available worldwide”. The FAQ, checked on 22 September 2026, says enrolment in Alpha Anywhere is paused through the end of 2026. Alpha Anywhere’s price is not published on the official site. Accreditation, diploma and college recognition

Alpha School is accredited by Cognia, a US non-profit accreditor for primary and secondary schools. In a 1 May 2025 blog post, Alpha said “every Alpha location” was Cognia-accredited at that time, including PreK–12 in Austin, and that new campuses would also be accredited. The Austin campus page states “Alpha Austin is accredited by Cognia”. Cognia has also published a community story about the accreditation. It describes Alpha High in Austin as the pilot, followed by system-wide accreditation. For a newly opened campus, it’s worth checking its status directly in Cognia’s directory.

On outcomes, the FAQ says Alpha students “perform in the top 1–2% nationally” on assessments like MAP Growth. Alpha High reports school SAT averages by class year, for example a school-wide average of 1410 (December 2024). These are the school’s own reported figures, not independent studies. A specific list of college admissions is not published on the official site. The diploma and transcript come from an accredited US private school, and the FAQ says transcripts can be requested from the registrar.

Alpha School vs NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY vs two other options (official data)

Parents who look at Alpha often compare it with other schools that break from the traditional classroom. Acton Academy is a learner-driven network that also started in Austin. Khan World School @ ASU Prep is a fully online, mastery-based programme. Our own school, NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY (NGA), is an online international school opening in 2027. Reviews and common concerns, answered honestly

Coverage of Alpha School is polarised. Some parents are enthusiastic, and some commentators are sceptical of AI-led schooling. Below are the recurring themes and, where possible, what the school says about each.

“Is it really only two hours of school?”

No. Students attend a full school day. The two hours refer to the core academic block. Afternoons are workshops and projects. In Austin, the day runs from 8:15 AM to 4:00 PM.

“Are children on screens all day?”

The FAQ says students spend roughly two hours on academic software. The rest is group projects, discussions, physical activity and workshops. Parents who want very little screen time should still ask how much workshop time also uses devices.

“Are there real teachers?”

Alpha says it “absolutely has educators”, but calls them guides. Guides mentor and motivate rather than lecture, and the software handles most of the direct instruction. Whether that suits your child is a matter of temperament. A shadow day is the best test.

“Is the model proven?”

Alpha points to MAP Growth results in the top 1–2% nationally and to SAT averages at Alpha High. These are the school’s own figures. Independent, long-term studies of 2 Hour Learning are not published on the official site. Weigh the reported results alongside your child’s own response on a shadow day.

“Is it worth $40,000–$75,000?”

That depends on what you compare it with. Compare the listed tuition with other private schools in your own city, and remember that Alpha says tuition includes all activities and trips. Families mainly paying for academics, rather than the afternoon workshops and campus community, may find a lower-cost online route does the same job.

Alternatives to Alpha School worth comparing

• Acton Academy. Founded in Austin in 2009. It is now a network of more than 300 locally owned campuses in 30 countries, built on Socratic discussion, self-paced goals and hands-on quests. Tuition and accreditation depend on the individual campus. Its international reach makes it one of the few in-person options with a similar philosophy outside the US.
• Khan World School @ ASU Prep. A full-time online, mastery-based programme for grades 6–12 with published annual prices, including an international rate of $13,700. It’s a natural choice if you like the mastery idea but need an online, accredited route.
• NIJIN GLOBAL ACADEMY (NGA). An online international school for ages 6–18, focused on Asia and Oceania, opening September 2027 (planned). It has no entrance exam and no English requirement. Classes are small live dialogue groups of about 8, with a bilingual (English–Japanese) mentor, CEFR-based English levels and social co-creation projects with companies and governments. It can run alongside a local school or as the main school, and it moves with the family if they relocate. Tuition isn’t published yet. NGA says it will be far more affordable than a typical international school, with no enrolment, facility or uniform fees, materials included and sibling discounts. The honest limits: NGA isn’t open yet, has no accreditation or graduates, and its live timetable is built for Asia–Oceania daytime, so families in the Americas or Europe should check it against local time.

How much does Alpha School cost per year?

It depends on the campus. The official Locations page lists annual tuition from $10,000 (Brownsville) to $75,000 (San Francisco, Palo Alto). Austin is $40,000, and most campuses fall between $40,000 and $65,000. There is also a $100 non-refundable application fee and a $1,000 deposit, which is deducted from tuition. Siblings get 5% off.

Is Alpha School accredited?

Yes. Alpha states that its locations are accredited by Cognia, and the Austin campus page says so explicitly. For a newly opened campus, confirm its status with the school or in Cognia’s directory.

Can international students enrol?

The results Alpha publishes are its own, and the model is young, so a shadow day and a close look at your child’s response are the best evidence you’ll get.

Choosing calmly: the right school is the one that fits your child

Alpha School is a serious, accredited option with a clear philosophy, and its tuition buys a full in-person day, guided life-skills workshops and all school activities and trips. It isn’t the only way to get mastery-based learning, though, and it’s only available to families near a campus for now. Start with where you live and what you can afford. Then look closely at the daily rhythm and whether your child enjoys it. Whatever you choose, a trial or shadow day will tell you more than any review.
